[GBPv2] reduce memory footprint - especially for "view grades" and "edit grades" tabs

Description

When having a big class (e.g. 1200+ students), the GBPv2 (and the original GBP) tend to require a lot of memory to build the table that displays the grades for a large number of students and/or assignments. This sometimes would require people change the /lib/setup.php and bump up the memory limitation from 64MB to 128MB (or more), which is really not a good solution. It would be good that GBPv2 and GBP can be improved on this issue. Thanks!

Wen - Yes - I definitely want to get pagination on the gradebook pages. First in GBPv2 and then in core. It just makes sense. Although I think our first priority should be the backup and restore of grade events (CONTRIB-174). Any help you can give in that department would be greatly appreciated. Peace - Anthony

Anthony, I will try to help as much as I could but I'm really swamped by a lot of projects now - we will be integrating with WebWork, then the moodle programmer's course (that I told you about)... will keep you updated....sorry about this...

Wen - CONTRIB-218 requested the ability to sort by username. It was fairly simple to add in - at least I think so as I've not been able to confirm that it actually works other than in theory. In any case, if you think this is a feature that users might benefit from then I would be happy to commit it; however, if not then we can just resolve it as Will Not Fix and leave the patches for those who are so inclined. Wen - As I recall we were trying to get this resolved in Moodle core first and then apply here. I believe that you had a patch. Could you add it here. I think it would be a good idea to go ahead and fix it in GBPv2. Peace - Anthony

Wen - I am resolving all of the GBPv2 improvements and feature requests as Won't Fix. All users of the GBPv2 patch are encouraged to use Moodle 1.9. Feature requests and improvements that were made for GBPv2 should be re-created for the 1.9 gradebook if those issues or ideas have not already been addressed. For large classes, I thought it would be nice in 1.9 to be able to filter by student name as it can be difficult to find a student. Would you be willing to create a tracker issue for that.
