Us one function at the top to contain all the logic and remove fiddly bits from elsewhere. Possibly increase the number of functions if necessary

Matt - Sorry for the bad commit comment. I meant to put CONTRIB-568. I will comment there about what happened. The linking to tracker issues takes place automagicallly when you provide the issue number as part of the commit comment. Peace - Anthony
