There is currently (I think) no way to get a list of roles that a user is assigned to. This can trip you up big time if assigning a user to a role when they are already assigned in a "higher" context. It would be nice to able to check or (perhaps even better) to be warned of possible conflicts.

The plugin "Assign one user" exactly do that...
