The initial interface configuration was made using the forms API (the wiki mockup was updated).

It saves/reads user options with xxx_user_preferences. An option has the format:
MODULENAME_loggedin, email
MODULENAME_loggedoff, jabber

Also created some new capabilities to restrict access
