Description

Very often user want to subcribe only to the particular discussions instead of the whole forum. Its particulary true for the problem-related forum in courses, or to the problem forums on the main moodle site, full reports from where can flood e-mail box.
Teacher also may want to receive messages only from his students from group, not from all students in the course.

(I just voted for http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-7368 but realized that it only applies to v. 1.6.3, that's why I made this new entry)

This is a much requested feature, however, I think there is a danger that when subscribing to a single discussion that other interesting or relevant discussions can go un-noticed. My suggestion is that, if users are allowed to subscribe to a single discussion, there should be force subscription to all new discussions - if they are not interested they can then unsubscribe from that discussion.

I agree with Ray this is indeed a much requested feature and I hope it is implemented sooner rather than later.

Unfortunately, I can't agree with the forced subscription idea. IMHO the biggest downside of the forums is the amount of "junk" mail that is received, so much so that I find the subscription more of a hinderance than a help in busy forums such as Moodle.org. If this idea gets wings, please make it configurable rather than forced.

Regards
Harry

Harry,

Good point. I neglected to mention that earlier. When I was posting I was also thinking about which level (context) this should be configurable... but had to dash and deleted my initial musings on that.

I'm pretty certain this should be by forum instance rather than at course level. Certainly not at site level as a global setting. As not all teachers will have override roles available to them there is the bespoke specific role option. Having a simple setting in the forum set up would be nice but I suspect it would not be flexible enough.

Overall, I think a key thing here is that devt in this area would need to be flexible enough to account for the very wide and varied range of usage of the forum module to construct activities.

Agree plus I would like the ability to subscribe to a tread in which I do not participate like I can here in the tracker. Here I am thinking especially on use of moodle.org forums.
