Students can't see group events in calendar

Description

Students do not see group calendar events, even though they are members of the group the event is assigned to. They are not visible in any of the student's calendars (course, site etc).

Discussions in forums suggest this is quite a common issue.

Apologies, I made an error in the report. The priority of this issue IS minor (although for me it's a major pain in the butt!) however it does NOT provide a security risk.

Derek fixed this issue (we think) in HEAD some time ago as part of MDL-10048. It should be fixed in 1.9.

However we did not merge with 1.8 because there were so many changes, and it was difficult to separate the ones which fixed the group issue from others (in some cases it wasn't clear which changes fixed it).

I have suggested to Derek that he should make changes in smaller chunks with separate bugs when working on Moodle core in future, and also consider merging bugfixes (as opposed to feature changes) back to at least the most recent release version.

Derek, please look at this one to see if it is feasible to merge the changes which make groups work into 1.8. However I know we can't afford to spend a lot of time on it (just to clarify, this is not something we broke - it's been broken since at least 1.7 if not before).
