From the forum post: http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=82928

"In Moodle 1.8.2 a weird phenomenon with the viewing of grades. The course in question has mostly Forums some of which have had posts rated. The teacher of the course reported that she couldn't view the grades in the gradebook, but when I log in as administrator I can view the grades fine. Doing a 'login as' to the teacher's account confirms the disappearance of the individual grades (see attached screenshot). Fiddling about with Preferences, weights etc has no effect. Now, when I return to the Administrator account I get the same behaviour – no grades are visible. Logging out and back in again resets everything. This problem is repeatable but I've only seen it in this particular class."

and my report:

"We are running moodle 1.8.2 on a Win2k3 server. Every other class that is using the gradebook has no problem. In this particular class the teacher has a blank gradebook. As admin I can see the grades until I login as her and then revert back to my account.

At that point I can no longer see any grades until I logout and log back in.

I've set her gradebook prefs/settings to match that of a working class gradebook, unhidden all hidden items, and made sure grouping is turned off. Nothing has worked so far. The only thing that appears different about her account is that she is in the Orphan group, as I imported her from a previous install.

Thinking that the orphan status may have some impact, I elevated a test user to the status of teacher within the course. The test user is able to see grades when I use the "login as," option."

A screenshot of the gradebook is attached.

Hi John,

Did this page finish displaying (i.e. does it have a footer)? Could you please turn debug on and paste the error message(s) here, if any?

Cheers,

Yu

I turned on three different debugging modes, normal, show all reasonable php error message, and developer.

The first two generated no error output when replicating the bug. The developer debugging generated a horrid error that stopped my entire moodle session, and forced me to go back a page and disable debugging outright.

Using the first two debugging modes the entire page rendered, including the footer.

Hi John, are you able to upgrade to the latest 1.8? There are some groups related issues fixed. If you are having the same issues after the upgrade, could you please provide a course backup? Please make a bakcup before you do the upgrade.

Cheers,

Yu

by setting groups:separate one can display the grades screen

I am finding these issues on versions 1.8.2 and 1.8.3 (2007021530) The attached graphic above (grade display workaround) shows a workaround which merely involves setting Groups: separate in the course settings.
I can confirm John Well's experience; turning on debug : ALL gives no error message when the grade screen does not display as it should.
I have placed a course backup (user files:yes, course files:no) which is 157Mb at http://ec281.lly.earlham.edu/tw/miss/modules/backup-inst488_200810-20071212-1531EARLHAM.zip . It'll be there for a week or so before I remove it. The backup is made on the production 1.8.2 version. The same issue occurs on 1.8.3 (as alluded to above). I would try poking at some code but I don't have time right now....

I am happy to report that this bug has now been fixed in the latest 1.8.3+ (2007021533)

I believe this is a duplicate of MDL-12320 and should be fixed in CVS. If not please let me know and I will re-open. Peace - Anthony

This was fixed in Moodle 1.84 and duplicates MDL-12320.
