Description

In the gradebook - grader report: 1.8 it was possible to 'reprint headers' every 'x' students. Whilst doing this complete with categories would take too much space - allowing the option to reprint the assignment titles would be a great help

Is there a simple way to have the headers panel remain static at the top of the screen?

This is a small patch to add the ability to repeat headers in the grade report. It adds a new option to the global grade report settings to repeat every X users. It adds the same option to the user's grader report settings.

Lael, thanks for your report.

Just wondering whether we need a 'reprint headers' every 'x' students setting as well as the students per page setting? Or is a 'reprint headers' every 'x' students setting more useful than a students per page setting?

I have inadvertantly duplicated this issue, sorry. There are some mock-ups and a link to a discussion here: MDL-18504. On the plus side, I now have a patch!

In 1.9.5 we've added instant mouseover tooltips over the grades. They give you the student and the grade item to which the grade belongs. Please try that and let us know if you feel that repeated headers are still needed.

It still would be a very useful feature for large gradebooks.
When there are over 100 students taking a course and there are over 50 assessments (bunch of quizzes in different categories, for example, which is common here), it is still cumbersome to hoover mouse back and forth between columns, just to figure out what they represent.

I think I'm missing something obvious. I wanted to install the patches from the top of this post to our test server, but for the life of me I can't work it out.

Could some-one point me in the right direction please. Do I need Tortoise CVS or something similar?

Cheers

The tooltips are nice, but in general they are not user-friendly to the instructor having to search through a gradebook of 20+ students that houses more than one page of gradebook items. As an administrator, I've had nearly all of my faculty complain about the tediousness of the gradebook and the difficulty of trying to maneuver through their gradebooks. As an instructor myself, I dread having to go to the gradebook because of this very issue. I'm consistently worried that I will put grades in the wrong category because I have to scroll up and down several times to even find the gradebook item I need.

Hi Paul,

Is your patch able to be updated for Moodle 2.x?

Hi Dan.

Wow, I'd totally forgotten about this. We used Brett Profitt's patch (above) in our 1.9 installation but have not had the same concerns with the 2.x gradebook as we did for 1.9 (probably as we've only been using it since September 2011 and the volume of assessments has not yet appeared).

I'm not ruling out having to consider this in the future though, as we do have courses with assessments and >2,000 users.
