External PDFs linked as a resource no longer load

Description

After upgrading from 1.8.1 to 1.8.4 it seems that externally hosted PDFs are not downloaded. The only way they can be accessed is using the direct link that is shown below where the PDF should be shown.

If you download the file directly it works fine. Locally hosted PDFs are fine as well as other externally hosted files types, ie excel documents.

Basically when you visit the page in a copy of IE7 the PDF object loads but you never see the actual file. I have also tested this onMoodle 1.9 + (Build: 20080306) and the same occurs.

I don't understand the issue. What do you mean by "not downloaded"? What exactly do you mean by "externally hosted"?

Thanks in advance for clarifying

Hi Nicolas

The browser appears to load the acrobat reader plugin, i.e. you get a white box in the middle of the screen however you never actually get to see the PDF. Try the link attached to this case to see.

With regard to externally hosted I mean the PDF is hosted on a different server, i.e. you are simply linking to a file on another server when creating the resource using a URL. For example the link attached tries to load a PDF that is hosted on a third party server.

Ok, then I understood you fine the first time. The reason I was confused is that the example you are giving works perfectly in both Firefox and IE7 for me. I am going to add more watchers for this bug, asking them to test your pdf file. If other people are having trouble we can probably investigate further in Moodle. But I am leaning more on the side of a browser/adobe issue.

Hi Nicolas

I have run more tests and a number of colleagues have also tried. The results are that no one can view the PDF via IE7 on XP and Vista but Firefox is fine.

Richard,

I am aware of the PDF/IE7 issue. Searching google for (IE7 pdf problem) returns 391,000 results. It is a general compatibility issue between IE7 and Adobe Reader, it has strictly nothing to do with Moodle.

See MDL-13903 for a fix. The IE7/PDF issue is not Moodle-related.
