Description

Should be pretty easy to implement. Just thought that it would be a good idea to add a "Add to contact list" button right next to the 'Send message" button that currently available on the personal profile page (see screenshot). From usability point of view, currently on moodle.org site if I want to add someone to my "contact list" (in message), I will have to first send him/her a "message" using the "Send message" button then the person will be added to your contact list, not very user-friendly if I want to just add them to my "message" contact list.

If people is busy I could help out implementing this. Let me know what you think (about whether this is a good idea).

+1 for this. I really think it's a good usability (and social) idea.

of course, it should be checked if the site has messaging enabled and if the user can send messages, but has sense IMO. Perhaps one cool small new functionality for 1.9.1 ? Just guessing...

Ciao

Laia - When viewing a profile what other options might be helpful. I would begin perhaps by asking on the forum why people pull up someone's profile and what would they like or expect to be able to do. The possibilities here for making increased use of social networking tools seems good. How are we organizing all of the information that is on the profile page? What is the method behind the madness? How can we keep it from just being a random accumulation of additional information? If we could determine some type of heirarchy within Moodle for the tabs that is logical it might help. Peace - Anthony

Anthony - After studying applications such as gmail, skype, facebook, linkedin or msn; I designed a first approximation of the new organization of the profile page http://docs.moodle.org/en/Student_projects/Usability_issues/ContactList#Comparing_with_other_software. After listening to the community http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=103183 and making an architecture information test, I will define my final proposal for the user profile.

Here is a patch for this. It adds a button to add or remove the contact to users other than oneself, depending on whether the user whose profile is being viewed is already a contact or not. I left the icons out to be consistent and have a button here instead of a link, and because it looks a bit wierd to display an icon between two buttons (you can see the result in the image "newwithicons.jpg").

Will this patch/idea be used for Moodle 2.0?

David - My own preference would be to not add this to core but leave it as an available patch option. I think it just adds to the user interface but that functionality for adding a contact which is technically a messaging function is best kept with messaging (IMHO). I'd be interested in reviewing what others think as there was not much response to Laia in the forums. Peace - Anthony
