Description

the forum groupmode does not work much in 1.8-1.9.0, it should be finally fixed in 1.9.1

teacher == has access to all groups
student == does not access to all groups

separate mode:

  • teacher may see/post in any discussion
  • student reply in own group discussion only, may see own group and for all participants
  • student may start discussions only for own groups

visible mode:

  • teacher may see/post in any discussion
  • student reply in own group discussion and discussions for all, may see all discussions
  • student may start discussions only for own groups

single discussion forum is a special case:

  • separate groups can not work properly == students are not allowed to post at all, only read everything
  • visible mode - students may see and reply

Hi Petr,

I've added group mode documentation to http://docs.moodle.org/en/Adding/editing_a_forum

Please let me know whether further details, such as a note about the use of group modes with single simple discussions, should be added.

Having read MDL-14270 I now understand the issue with single simple discussions and separate group mode better and have added a note in the documentation.

All information of the issue description has been reported in the documentation. Thanks Helen

I just have two comments:

1. About all Moodle doc, I don't find the "moodle/site:capability_name" word user friendly. I would even say that it should not be in any manual. I think it's clear for a developer but a normal user would be confused. A normal user speak about role or capability name.
"moodle/course:managegroups" capability: the user clicks on the link, the user understands what's about but doesn't know where to activate this capability. (this problem is maybe for all capabilities mentionned in the user manual)

2. I think I understood the note about the single discussion forum when I read this issue description. If Single simple discussions "cannot be set to separate groups" it's because it can not work properly (bug, code problem,...?). Maybe the reason should be mentionned: "Single simple discussions cannot be set to separate groups at this time (implementation too complex). In order to simulate a single simple discussion set to separate groups, use a standard forum. The teacher can copy and paste the same discussion topic for different groups. If required, a permissions override may be set to prevent students from starting new discussions."

Hi Jerome,

Thanks for your comments

As mentioned in our skype chat, the reason for using moodle/site:capability_name is that it's the same in all languages and the permissions settings pages contain both easily understandable names for capabilities and also moodle/site:capability_name names.

Re. where to activate a capability, yes this isn't always obvious. It requires and understanding of how roles and permissions work.

Re. single simple discussions, I've added the words "as this feature is not implemented" as per your suggestion. Thanks again
