Sure, I'm doing my best, but thinking about this lead to the murky waters of MDL-10899 and MDL-14750 that really needed to be fixed first, and which I checked in on Friday.

This is basically done (but not yet tested). The code is currently in a patch attached to MDL-14378, which Petr is now looking at.
