Jerome, can you please download the windows installer and see what you can improve in the initial installation process? Pretend you are a real novice.

How it is: Last I remember there were confusing icons, and the README wasn't right.

How it should be: One obvious icon that you click on to start the install, together with one simple README.txt you can read for more info if you really need it, containing a link to Moodle Docs where people can provide further tips or screenshots etc.. All the rest of the complexity should be hidden.

from memory, the xampp control panel didn't run well on win2k3 and would not shut down cleanly. I was running apache and mysql by double clicking on the separate icons for a while. Maybe this has changed?

A check of the enabled modules is important too as I found a couple of trip-ups e.g. LDAP. All of the enrollment options plus networking should work out of the box.

Another closely related issue is the inital memory settings. It should be clear (somewhere - docs?) that the mysql settings as well as php modules loaded have been set up to optimise uisability and that performace tuning is possible, even necessary, for a production site.

Hi Matt,

knowing that there are a bunch of suggestions from you (default settings, modules enabled...)... do you think we could create one META: Improve Windows Installer bug and move existing bugs there to have all them together (including this).

I think it could improve the fixing experience... do you?

Thanks for your continued suggestions! Ciao

Great idea. Much better than my raw brain-dump I started to just now with http://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-14825 but don't have permissions to convert existing bugs to sub-tasks.

Ok as all bugs have been described in another issues, I close this issue which is a bit messy. Thanks Matt and Eloy
