Description

It would be great if resources could be set to appear at a specified time and/or remain visible only until a specified time. This would be similar to the existing functionality making an activity only available in a certain time window. Currently, I have to post material non-visible, then remember to make it invisible manually at a certain time. Sometimes, I want to make something appear at a set time and might not be easily able to access the Moodle site (because I'm away from a computer or teaching another class).

There are three main reasons this would be useful (to me, at least):

1) material could be posted to a Moodle page before a course begins and made to appear automatically for a time window during which it will be relevant.

2) resources could be visible only for a short and specified time. In some countries, this would help comply with fair use laws concerning copyrighted material (one of the conditions for fair use being limited distribution)

3) material relevant to an assessment could be "up" only until the assessment occurs, etc.

While I have difference reasons and ideas about the invisibility part, it would be nice to have hide and unhide by date.

There is not much discussion about what this would entail. I can see the most basic (another couple of settings when you create the assignment initially). Shall this functionality be also extended to whole topics? Resources and activities??

My second thought has to do with the "recycled" course (which I do a lot of). My prime reason to hide things is to prevent the entire course from being available and overwhelming my students the first week of class. I also sometimes change, add, or hide whole topics from one semester to the next. I do not delete them, because I often use them (or parts of them) in future incarnations of the course.

It is very tedious to go in and change the availability settings on every single assignment. And, when we archive the courses, I would like to leave the resources available, but hide the assignments (since they aren't very relevant anymore). I would love to see some kind of interface where we could adjust the availability settings for every assignment (at least for a topic at a time, if not the whole course) on one page. It would save me a lot of time. Kind of like the new interface Nicolas is working out for setting all the assignments and categories for the gradebook on a single page.

This is already done for Moodle 2.0. See http://docs.moodle.org/en/Conditional_activities.
