Description

My recollection is that in the gradebook prior to 1.9, I could choose to have any assignment that was hidden in a topic section ALSO be hidden in the gradebook. This was automatic and very good for mature courses that had all assignments included (some of which might be assigned or might not be assigned depending on the needs of the class). You could roll them out topic by topic so as to avoid confusing/overloading students early in the course.

I don't seem to be able to do this in the 1.9 gradebook without a lot of work. I can hide an entire category pretty well (and make sure that doesn't show on the student view, but it still shows in grader view and takes up a lot of space), but I do not want to have to unhide all future assignments in the topic and then unhide them in the gradebook as well! This is a good deal of extra clicking (duplicate effort, for the most part) and I am likely to make errors.

In addition, these automatically hidden assignments should not be part of the grade calculation for the students. There might be additional feature requests on this. I didn't know whether to include them here, or not.

I have made an uncategorized category with zero weight and put all the assessment items I have not set yet (hidden items) into it.

This took about 15 minutes as after each one the screen has to completely refresh. Multiple moves would be much appreciated in the grades category screen. Anyway it is done now.

Please developers can you get a "Aggregate only visible items" option into the grade book. Using this current setup I have to unhide an item on the course screen so the students can see it, then open the item to modify it, and recategorised it, then get into the grade book and make it visible there as well. This seems a bit silly really. Then when I start my course next year I'll have to move all the items into Uncategorized again and hide them all again or when students go to check their grades they see all 40 items rather than just the 5 I have set in the first topic.

There has to be a better way.

Patch attached fixes this. Now when showing or hiding activity, set_coursemodule_visible function will show/hide corresponding grade item as well.
Patch is applied with -p0 key.
If there's a necessity to "lock" grade item from being shown by this functionality (for example: you have some grade items, which you want to be hidden all the time, but you also want to show/hide corresponding activities as it's necessary), you may move those grade items to some hidden category, and they will not be shown ever - but at first you should apply my MDL-17245 patch to gradebook.

I think closing this bug report as duplicate, while it would be resolved only in 2.0, is not a very good way.
At this moment if I create hidden activity or just hide the activity I must go to the Gradebook and hide grade item manually. It's a very bad usability...

Date of Moodle 2.0 release is getting further and further. Moodle 2.0 will contain so many changes that the situation will be like Moodle 1.7. I think, stability of 1.9 and 2.0 branches will be incomparable. That is, even after release people would have to wait for a long time before it would be acceptible for them to use on production servers. And after all, a patch to solve this issue on 1.9 is rather simple.

Linked issue MDL-19133 changed from duplicate to dependency. Reopening, as MDL-19133 is not yet fixed. When it is, this issue can be closed too.

Watchers, thanks for your interest.

Marking this resolved. Seems to be a duplicate of MDL-15457 which I recently fixed. Any comments or suggestions about the fix can be made there
