Description

When the 'without author' modes are chosen in the glossary, this is intended so that students can focus on the content of contributions, and not on who wrote them.

Consequently it would be better if the glossary also hid the 'browser by author' tab in these modes, meaning that there is no way for students to find out who wrote an entry.

The tab would remain visible to teachers (those with the 'approve' permission or whatever).

The above is my opinion (somewhat clarified following an argument with Helen!). I am looking for opinions from others (users, Moodle HQ). If people want this feature I am willing to implement it, for either 1.9 or 2.0.

I created a discussion about this in the glossary forum so we will see what people think..

sam: Anybody know about glossary? Opinion: the two 'without author' modes should not display the 'browse by author' tab (they currently do). Is this correct?

Helen: my first reaction is that it's not a bug
Helen: teachers will normally always want to make use of the browse by author tab
Helen: (for student created glossaries)

sam: aha
sam: of course. damn
sam: our situation is for course-team created glossaries and they don't want names appearing on it - the problem is that the names aren't even the real authors, just whoever entered it into the system
sam: oh well, I probably need to do yet another OU-specific hack.

Helen: why not suggest they use the database module?

sam: Database doesn't autolink, does it?

Helen: yes it does

sam: ohhh. hm

Helen: though you can't set several different keywords

sam: that would probably be a problem
sam: ...so um helen, it wouldn't be appropriate to hide the 'browse by author' tab in the no-author glossaries even if it was only hidden for students and not teachers?
sam: just sort of wondering what the point of the 'without authors' modes is
sam: sorry to go on about this but it's still confusing me

Helen: well, I think it's a bit like the database list template - you can choose not to include the author to make the display more succinct

sam: I thought people might choose it if they wanted students to focus on contributions and not who made them etc. But... never mind, I give up I'll just hack it.

Helen: yes, that's well put - letting students to focus on contributions and not who made them

sam: well, in that case, shouldn't the author tab be hidden for students in those modes?
sam: I guess it would be a change to existing behaviour, which people might not want. So probably not a good idea to do it as a 'bugfix' anyway.
sam: Thanks for the help.

Helen: I can see your point of view Sam
Helen: and it is a (minor) annoyance if you export and import entries and end up with all of them authored by admin

sam: In this case it shows the real name of website administrators etc who do not want students to know who they are particularly, and aren't the people who wrote the text of the entries
sam: but I hacked it, so now it doesn't
sam: bit of a shame as we don't have many OU changes in glossary yet, but oh well

Helen: how about adding your hack to the m&p database

sam: nah too much effort I don't think patches are good idea in there anyhow really.

Helen: actually, you're very persuasive Sam - I'm now wondering whether you could add an improvement issue in the tracker for people to vote/comment on

sam: OK - I'll chuck it into the tracker

Helen: thanks
