though there is now a script to convert journal activities to online assignments it is highly probably that many would upgrade without converting which could cause a good deal of confusion and possibly upgrade issues. It would be best if the 2.0 set-up script tested for existence of journals and then prompted user to confirm that user wanted the existing activities converted to assignments before finishing the upgrade.

It would make far more sense to just maintain the journal activity in its current form but make it feed into the gradebook.
We love the journal interface. One screen to do the reading, replying and grading.
Why change it. Just make it feed into the gradebook.

Can't say I disagree with you about allowing journal to persist, but I posted this suggestion because though the "movement" to keep journal has been very vocal, the response from core developers has also been consistent.....

This is fine but somebody needs to step up and maintain Journal or provide a cash incentive for somebody else to (as an optional/contrib module). The fate of Journal was decided some years ago.

In 2.0 Online Text has been improved to provide the same one-screen interface. I hope this resolves a lot of people's objections.

I personally like the Journal and have serious objections to current internal assignment module design. Please let me know if there is a new trustworthy maintainer or some funds to get it to good shape again. Please note that it might be better to keep it as is in contrib for now instead of random hacking and adding of weird new features - these well intended, but short sighted changes are very often the biggest problems for new potential maintainers.

Petr,

Sounds like there's two issues here I don't really have a big problem with Online Assignments. We use them a lot and the transition from Journals was painless - excepting I had to write the conversion script. Other than that, I'm unsure what you mean. I wasn't aware that any new features had been added to Journal. Of course, it would need a minimum of attention for 2.0.

yes, two issues. 1/ is the assignment internals and long standing bugs 2/ is something I have seen in other modules that were moved from core to contrib
