To recreate

Set up quiz with questions and timer
Student commences attempt
Student abandons attempt before time allowed expires
Log in as teacher
Visit results tab
Attempt is shown as open
Time allowed for student attempt expires in the meantime
Refresh page, logout and in as teacher
Status of attempt is not updated unless the student revisits the quiz attempt.

I think this is a bug rather than a feature.
