Description

It took me a few days to figure out why I was not receiving any emails from the moodle forums; being new to moodle, I did not know that enrolment was required.

Perhaps "subscribe" buttons should be disabled on

http://moodle.org/mod/forum/index.php?id=5

with a message like "Enrolment in the "Using Moodle" course is required in order to subscribe to forum emails" and a link to get that done. If that's not possible, more text like "Please see 'Enrol in Using Moodle' link in the Administration block to left on this page in order to enrol" or something similar.

Also, text like that could be included on

http://moodle.org/mod/resource/view.php?id=1361

since that mini-FAQ sends the user straight off to the forums, but doesn't mention the enrolment requirement in order to receive emails.

Hi Brian,

I've just checked http://moodle.org/mod/forum/index.php?id=5 using guest access and not found any "subscribe" buttons. Sorry I don't understand what you mean about the button being disabled. Please could you explain.

Sorry, Helen, I was not very precise. Perhaps what I should have said was:

'Under the Subscribed column are buttons that toggle between Yes and No. Toggling them to "Yes" does not actually result in emails being sent if one is not Enrolled in the "Using Moodle" course, but does lead a user to believe that they will receive email notifications based on their account preferences .'

Does that help explain what I meant?

a related problem is the workflow to actually enrol.

you must navigate to the course page using the breadcrumbs, from the forum, and then enrol from the admin block there.

Brian, apologies it took me so long (9 months!) to realise what you're referring to. Let me explain the problem as I now understand it by listing the steps to recreate it:

1. Login to moodle.org using an account which is not enrolled in the Using Moodle course.
2. Follow the link to Using Moodle http://moodle.org/course/view.php?id=5 (You now have guest access, and attempting to reply to a discussion results in a prompt to enrol in the course.)
3. Access the forum index page http://moodle.org/mod/forum/index.php?id=5
4. Attempt to subscribe to a forum by clicking the button in the subscribed column.

The button changes from No to Yes, but you are not subscribed because you are not enrolled in the course.

I agree with you that either the subscribed column should be hidden when browsing with guest access, or attempting to subscribe to a forum should result in a prompt to enrol.

I've just changed this from a moodle.org sites (MDLSITE) issue into a moodle (MDL) one, as it's not only moodle.org which is affected.

Reassigning to the forum component lead.

Clearly a bug. In my opinion you should get prompted to enrol there ...
