Description

I think it would be helpful if the global search also displayed user profiles in its results. I can see the need arising for students, teachers, and admins to be able to search for a user. This function is meant for convenience if the searcher knows the necessary information about the person being searched. It might also be helpful if you only have partial data to be able to search for people using some part of their name, the course they are enrolled in, email address, city/town, etc. The more criteria it is able to search the better. I am not sure if this should be limited by role assignment.

Thanks Colin - This is a good idea if it is not already doing it. Once we get the JSEA server setup and working for global search I'll be better prepared to assess what it is and is not checking. Peace - Anthony

Colin - The global search does appear to search for users but I am not sure against what fields it is searching. I put in Franey and came up with two users (one an old deleted one and the other was your current user. The global search does not look against email but I suspect that could be arranged. Peace - Anthony

I tried the search feature again and it appears to search against the "author" field which is somewhat useful, unless the person is very active on the website (which is something we want to) because it returns every instance of authorship. For instance as an admin I already return 17 pages worth of "hits".

It also appears to search forum, blog, and wiki text which is both good and bad. The bad is that it will loop the same forum post over and over again because as people responded they used the persons name, but so each reply in the same forum post comes back as a different hit when you search for it.

These are my observations for now. Good luck. - Colin

Colin - That does seem to be the nature of global. If we were to do otherwise folks would complain that the search results were incomplete. I think it functions as it ought to function. Stop doing so much and your life will be easier Peace - Anthony
