Component/s: Accessibility, Chat
Affects Version/s: 1.9.5
Fix Version/s: None

Participants: Dongsheng Cai and Helen Foster
Security Level: None
Affected Branches: MOODLE_19_STABLE

 Description  « Hide
JavaScript-based chat was effectively impossible to use. The frames made it difficult for users to form a mental model of the page. The new messages, brought in by JavaScript page refreshes, weren't visible to JAWS and thus weren't read.

Why it matters

Screen reader users cannot participate in the conversation.

Possible solution

More clearly differentiate the two paths into chat, e.g.:

    * "Enter chat with JavaScript and frames (difficult for users of assistive technology)."
    * "Enter chat with no JavaScript and no frames (more accessible)."
