Description

A better default theme (better than standardwhite) is well overdue, especially when compared to other open source systems such as Wordpress or Drupal which are a lot easier on the eye out of the box.

One reservation I have is the switch from a variable width theme to fixed width. This will cause issues with many sites. For example how does a link to file website, same window, keep navigation visible look using the frame option?

Whether it's considered good practice or not to use this option many sites will have resources set up like this.

Ray - Anomaly is a completely fluid width with a variable margin added to the left and right of the content. This is the same setup we have on Moodle.org. While it might be a good idea to reduce that margin for widespread use, it should work fine with all content.

OK. I'd gained the impression that it was fixed width, so that's good. Also did a quick check and in 2.0 and I see that the new URL resources doesn't have that option anymore.

This type over overhang is a real turn off and needs to be avoided in default/standard themes. I think Patrick mentioned recently somewhere that he's waiting for some 2.0 theme code to be finalised so that work can start in earnest on polishing Anomaly.

From my point of view, it's really just a matter time management. I think the changes currently being made are great for the future of the project, but I'll need time to learn the changes and create the themes. Are you speaking of something else, Ray?

Yes, Moodle needs that. I'm really looking forward to what you come up with for core.

I'm going to go for -1 for this theme being the new default. The reasons,

imo it's not crisp enough the colours are really quite muted.

Not neutral enough to appeal broadly out of the box.

Do the rounded corners make it look a bit dated?

It IS a neat theme. But is it the best choice for the new site default?

I have to say that I tend to agree with you, Ray. I've always felt that this was a good option for a 2.0 default theme, but think we should wait and see if something better came along. I have another 10+ themes yet to release for the core. Who knows what we'll find. I think it's a bit early to decide that this is the one.

Are you developing any accessible themes for 2.0 e.g. large font, high-contrast?

No plans to do so. I suppose it's something I could consider.

I quite agree with Ray Lawrence's comment - 09/Oct/09 07:28 AM.
I think this theme has a serious accessibility issue in having some zones which totally lack contrast; see e.g. attached screenshot. And the "rounded corners" are really dated. Please let's have "normal" square corners; anyway at the moment the rounded corners are not even correctly displayed (see screenhot).

I'm guessing Anomaly might not be default now but it's something to consider. What should the default be?

I would agree that this shouldn't be a default theme. Let me crank some themes out over the next couple months during beta. The default theme (if there is one) should be simple, clean, and attractive.
