Description

The new amazing Navigation Block for Moodle 2.0 always shows course categories the course categories. This is surely fine in many situations, while in other it could be preferred to show only "My courses". Same happen to breadcrumbs. For example, Think to large sites with huge number of categories and sub-categories.

Currently, the only display options available for navigation blocks does not allow to hide categories form the navigation block, and breadcrumbs has limited configuration options.

Possible solutions:

  • for navigation block, introduce a new drop down box setting "Use My Course link only"
  • for breadcrumbs, add appropriate configuration items

Assigning this to Sam for his consideration. I agree that hiding categories sounds like a good option (IMO separated options for the breadcrumb/navigation block). So my +1

Thanks for the report and ciao

Hey guys, thanks Andrea for the idea. It's got my +1 as well so I'll put it into action.
For the navigation block I will introduce an block config option, and may even look at a filters in user preference.
As for the navbar that would need to be a site config option for a couple of reasons, but I think that is certainly a go as well.

I think this needs to be reopened (or a new issue raised), as it appears no longer to work in Moodle 2.1.1.

As Administrator, I always see the category in the breadcrumb trail and in the navigation block, but as a Teacher I cannot see it in either place. Changing "Display categories as links" in the Navigation block setting has no effect.

Steps to reproduce:

  • As Admin, create a new course and enrol one user as a Teacher and another as a Student
  • In the new course, edit the Navigation block settings and set "Display categories as links" to Yes
  • Log in as the Teacher and go to the course. The category does not appear in the breadcrumb trail, nor in the Navigation block. Expected behaviour is that the category would appear.
  • Log in as the Student and go to the course. Again, the category does not appear in the breadcrumb trail, nor in the Navigation block. Expected behaviour is that the category would appear.

Steve, thanks for your feedback. As we now have a policy of not reopening previously fixed bugs, please could you create a new issue for it.
