Description

If a course is shared by many teachers and where each teachers' students are in different groups in the course, there may be instances in which one teacher decides to add an extra assignment. It would be great if the teacher could make the assignment and then check which groups it should apply to. The other groups would not see the assignment (and it wouldn't show up in their gradebook).

Potentially this feature could be added to any aspect of Moodle to enhance teacher collaboration without requiring Metacourses.

This would be a great feature even if a single teacher is teaching the course.
I teach a course that meets on alternate days for different groups of students. As such, the due date for assignments is different for each group. If I create 2 separate assignments with two different due dates, there would be two different entries in the gradebook. To get around that now, I create an assignment for one group and choose a due date. Then I add an event to the calendar for the 2nd group. This is somewhat confusing since there are two calendar entries with just slightly different names.
The feature you are suggesting would solve that problem.

I agree. Courses can be set with groupings but we run whole-year Moodles. Currently teachers go off to their own courses to add one or two items. A simpler way would be to put in the occasional group-specific task without the need to set up groups and groupings e.g. to cover work when teachers are absent.

Our teachers work collaboratively in terms of creating resources, so having one course per subject per year group works well, with all students studying Year 7 Geography on one course, separated into different groups (representing their classes). However, teachers do need the ability to set slightly different assignments per class and use different due dates etc, so we would really appreciate it if they could set assignments for specific groups too. It would be great if students who are not in the same group as the assignment don't see it at all.
