In response to http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=161512#p710507, I remember at one point either thinking or suggesting somewhere in the tracker that we should actually remove those fields from mdl_user and instead create a separate table whereby various IM service or notification accounts could be created. This would allow for these types of services to be better integrated with the new way Moodle 2.0 handles notifications. It would also allow flexibilty for when new types of services are created since it would just be adding another record rather than having to modify the database structure itself. Peace - Anthony

It's probably best to just add a generic Jabber field (possibly labeled as "Jabber (e.g. Google Talk)") instead of a Google Talk-specific field, since Google Talk uses Jabber.

Closing this as it is possible to do this as a custom profile field.

MDL-28452 will also address this in a better way.
