I think we need to keep some distinction between the quiz module and the assignment module. The essay question in a quiz is not supposed to be a replacement for the assignment module. Essays that are substantial enough to merit an individual email message should be set as assignments.

You are right and that is what I have been thinking since I originally posted this. Another way to do it and perhaps a little less overwhelming than a mailbox full of emails would be to put a flashing star next to the quiz on the course page when there is material that needs grading. Such a feature could also be applied to the assignment and lesson modules when there is material that needs teacher attention as well. A teacher doesn't need to know that a particular student has something that needs grading, just that there is stuff that needs grading in general. And this would be a subtle and simple way to indicate it.

I think someone had a grading block that does indicate which activities are in need of grading. Perhaps that should be extended to include the quizzes.

I installed that block, the marking block, on my site, but I did not like it at all because it also shows the students their grades and contains information that I feel could be terribly demoralizing because it shows their rank in the class overall. So how is that going to make a student feel if it says they are number 39 out of 39 in a particular class?

I just had an idea. Why not make it like the unread forum posts? Next to the quiz module, or any other activity that requires grading, it could show the teacher the number of quizzes that need grading, so instead of 50 unread posts you would see 50 ungraded quizzes. I really just don't like lots of blocks and there is already an overabundance of them in my opinion. I think the heavy reliance on blocks in Moodle reflects a lack of serious thought about how to best integrate new elements. If someone makes something new, they just tack it on like an ugly wart as a block. There is only so much screen real estate and things are already at a breaking point.

I've lowered the priority of this because I just noticed that the recent activity page shows when a student has completed a quiz and this will do the trick for me since it allows me to deal with all sorts of activity in the course (including forum posts) at one time.
