What a nightmare! I've got my first quiz submissions from students and there are unanswered essay questions all over the place. There needs to be some sort of check of a student's submissions that warns them if they are about to make a final submit of a quiz without answering all questions. Is there not some way I can at least reopen the quiz for these students manually from the database without having to delete it and start all over again?

The quiz has lots of different submit buttons that do different things. This confuses students, and they often end up finishing their attempt before they have done all the questions by mistake. Therefore, before finishing the attempt, they should be taken to a screen where they are shown a summary of which questions they have completed.

When students try to close an attempt they should get a popup window warning them about the consequences and asking if they really want to do that. Are your students not getting that?
One thing you can do is allow unlimited attempts at the quiz (one of the quiz settings).

Yes, they see the popup, but the default text doesn't warn them to make sure they have answered everything. And besides, you know how people will sometimes not read things before clicking.
You suggest making unlimited attempts. That is not going to work for an exam with essay questions. How does the teacher know when the student has finally finished attempting it? One doesn't want students changing essays after they have been graded. The workshop module seems more appropriate for that sort of thing, not the quiz.
I think it is another feature that may be contributing to this problem. There often can be a lot of pages in a quiz. If the student clicks the button to save a page, it doesn't take him to the next page as one would expect, it just keeps him on the same page. He must choose the next page he wants to go to himself. There is always the chance he might accidentally skip a page. This is what seems to have happened with my students. It would make more sense if Submit this Page were changed to Submit this Page and Go to Next. You can always keep the navigation there if students want to jump around, but forcing them on to the next page will make it a higher probability they will see the next page and not skip it.

Gustav-Of all the quiz related requests I have made, now that I have started my course, this has become my most desired feature. The VAST MAJORITY of my students are making this mistake and it is eating a lot of my time dealing with it. I have quizzes that take a lot of time and students come and go from them over a day or two to finish them and they almost inevitably forget a question or a lot more before they submit.

There is another request for something like this here:
