Description

Ever since Moodle.org was upgraded to 1.6, it is difficult to use it with Netscape 7: the left column takes full screen and the remaining two columns are squeezed narrow and outside the visible screen area. See attached screen snapshot. Versions 1.5.x displayed without a problem.

Actually, if I make the browser window full screen, only part of the right columns is outside the window boundary (as on the attachment). Interesting that the yellow header spreads only to the same width as the left column.

Just to report that I continue to have this problem and correct something I said earlier. It is not the main homepage that exhibits the problem but the main page of the Using Moodle course. I have seen this with version 1.5 only sporadically whereas with version 1.6 it is almost certain to occur. I say almost as literally twice I got a proper display (out of at least 50 visits since my previous entry here). Also with 1.5, reloading the page would normally fix the display and that does not happened in 1.6 yet. The effect is as if the header had the width of the leftmost column only but apparently this is an artifact not the immediate cause since the header spans all three columns when column width are properly displayed. I believe that something in CSS was changed for 1.6 that brings this problem out. Curious that the homepage (both before and after login) always display properly. German course also displays properly. Only Using Moodle glitches. And only its main page.

Is there a way to retitle a bug report? This problem is with and only with the main page of the "using moodle" course. Unfortunately, the title says something different.

And this issue drives me bonkers since the real content of this page is squeezed into 2-inch-wide column. It occurs in Netscape7 99% of time, which happens to be the browser on my communication computers.

The affected version should be changed to 1.7.

As a matter of fact, it seems that something was just changed that makes matters worse. Not only the "using moodle" page malfunctions but now also the homepage (after login not before) and German course page malfunction. Earlier only "using moodle" page was malfunctioning.

The screen shots of the above examples are attached. Each provided as a pair of left and right images corresponding to me scrolling to the left or right of the pageview. I got lucky to also geta normal view of the homepage in the very same browser window, so you can compare the good and the bad.

Yuk! Weird.

I think we need to blame Netscape 7 (which is obsolete ...)

Can you try iCab? http://www.icab.de/

Well, it is as much obsolete as OS9. It is the latest version of Netscape that works there. And it works still amazingly well for all kinds of web sites. I really have few problems. Except Moodle recently

Anyway, iCab fares better but "using Moodle" page still malfunctions. The effect is quite different, though. See the new attachment. If I scroll down further, I do get the proper content in three proper columns. The list of errors is however 3 pages long. I included snapshots only of top and bottom ones.

This behaviour seams to be very special N7 related.

Robert, are you able to reproduce the error on your local machine? If you can you may consider to try extending the JavaScript "fix_column_widths() {" for IE to catch N7 too and force the correction of the left column width. This function is in "javascript-static.js".

You may try to save the not working page to your disc (I know that you get the whole page with JS and CSS in FF) .

Robert, I suppose you need to find a solution localy. When you got it Martin may then add the working extended JS to the Moodle.org theme.

Urs, strange that you say it is specific to N7 if I just reported that iCab trips as well, just with different visual effect. And iCab is known to follow the standards pretty well.

Anyway, I can try to help as much as I can. I have no current version of 1.7 installed locally, but I will get it . What I find strange is a systematic progression to worse behavior with each newer release.

I wonder if any of the errors reported by iCab could be contributing to the problem. Sadly, the themes are using more and more advanced features and getting more and more beyond what normal users can figure out.

closing as won't fix - Moodle.org now runs 2.x and the supported list of browsers has changed a lot since this bug!
