When a user changes their email in their profile this change is not propagated to the messaging system. The reason is that the messaging system keeps an independent record of the email address in the user preferences.

The same applies to the email format. This too the user should only have to specify in one place, namely the profile. There should be no separate setting for this inside the messaging system.

Wow. I just ran into this one and its big. I've been hassling my students for over a year now on the assumption that any message I send them will be forwarded to them automatically if they have their email enabled in their profile. This explains a lot of missed homework.

This certainly is not minor as it runs counter to the intuitive assumption that you should set your email once and that should be in your user profile. Also the default should be set to on initially and configurable from the admin interface.

Matt, thanks for your comments.

Increasing priority to major and adding fix version in the hope that this issue can be looked into soon.

It's actually supposed to be a feature, so that messages can be sent to a different email (such as an SMS gateway).

Moodle 2.0 will have much better control over what goes where so this will become a non-issue.
