I have committed rewritten course reset into cvs 1.9 and HEAD - it is based on code and ideas from Shamim Rezaei and Enrique Castro, thanks!
The changes are quite big and not fully backwards compatible, that is why it will not be backported into 1.8, sorry.

Please test the new code and report any problems.
