Moodle sorts users by firstname throughout the site. Many teachers are used to lastname sorting in most products. Maybe consider a variable in config.php (or elsewhere) to implement lastname sorting of users in all pages - willing to fund.

Any progress here ? The default (and not changeable) sort order is specially annoying in the Enrol students page, in sites with many students.

there is a setting in config to allow ordering of names to be done by different methods - eg surname/firstname etc. - fullname is also configurable by the lang pack.

I agree – we haven't been able to find this configuration option in current versions of Moodle (1.9+)
