number of assignments are not shown for the teacher

Description

The teacher can't seee the number of assignments given by students.
The number is '0' after a student answered the assignment.

I can confirm that I have the same problem in 1.8. I do not see that the student has handed in anything. Only when I click on "grade" do I see the file that they had uploaded. I have so far only tested this with the upload file assignment type.

I am seeing this on a client's site - has always been 1.8 - was updated to 1.8+ from CVS half an hour ago, but still has the problem. A Major problem as far as I am concerned.

I have the same problem with a live client.

File upload assignment is started. Settings are:

Grade: 100

Due Date checked for May 28
Allow resubmitting: No
Email alerts to teachers: Yes

Group mode: No groups
Visible: Show

Although the deadline has passed, I was able to see this before that time. It also seems that when the site admin uploaded the file, it appeared for the teachers.

Moodle release:

Moodle 1.8 (2007021501)

EDIT: Groups are not set for the course. All participants are Students in Roles.

The link say 60 students has submitted assignments, but I can only see 54 files.

I decided to update a system directly to 1.9 where the issue seems to be fixed. I used another tinier moodle I run and had some problems e.g. all passwords where gone.
As the moodle I have this bug is a quite big one and we use it at the moment I don't dare to make an update. I'll report if I do the update to 1.8.5, but I think I will update to 1.9 then.

I have rewritten the code in 1.9.x completely, unfortunately it depends on other parts of 1.9.x
anybody wants to work on this?
