Description

The course-adjustment is set to seperate groups.
Then I create a group-forum that is also set to seperate groups. But when a new student enrolls to the course who is not in a group yet, he is able to enter the forum via the "recent activity" window. He can read and write posts. When he wrote an answer to a post of a certain group, the actual members of the group are no more able to write an answer.

I am not sure if this problem is forum specific or if it relates to other activities aswell.
Since we are currently implementing a new activity for exercises that have to be solved per group, this could become a problem to us. Because we don't want a group reading the exercises or solutions of another group.

This is what I did to try to reproduce your error:

1. Log on as admin
2. Set course to "separate groups"
3. Set forum to "separate groups"
4. Post a message with the "all participants" group select option
5. Post a second message with a specific group selected
6. Create a new student account
7. Log out
8. Log in as the new student
9. Click on the forum name in the "recent activities" block
10. Only the first message (see step 4) is there, and I can reply to it. The second message isn't there

Consequently I'm not sure whether this is a bug or an incorrect procedure. Could we get more feedback from other users?

I have experienced this issue in Moodle 1.8.3 and reproduced it. Both student accounts were already created and placed in separate groups. I did not create a new student account nor post under "all participants." I posted as one student, logged out, logged in as a second student. "No new activity" still appeared in the "Recent Activity" block, but when I clicked on "Full Report of Recent Activity," I could access the other group's discussion board post and reply to it even though I was a student in another group.

This was already fixed during groups rewrite and recent activity cleanup in 1.9dev. Unfortunately the changes can not be bacported directly, there will have to be a new patch and testing,,.

I don't understand why this bug's status is resolved. The bug still exists in 1.8.2.
Through link "Full Report of Recent Activity" in "Recent activity" block, we can access other group's discussions.
There are also other means to access other group's discussions, e.g. by subscription to notification, or by access to user profiles.
