Can someone do some research on the best (cross-platform, web-safe) font to use?

Maybe there is no such font for all OS, browsers and languages but there are many good fonts (some free for non commercial use and some come with OS) available like Arial Unicode MS, Lucida Sans Unicode/Lucida Grande and "almost free" Bitstream Cyberbit, TITUS Cyberbit Basic, Code2000 and the Free UCS Outline Fonts. But in css font-family allows using all of them...

A new free and interesting unicode font will be released soon:

Could it be possible to use some kind of text filter where you can toggle between graphics (gif-images instead of unicode characters) and UTF-8 like in

http://people.w3.org/rishida/scripts/uniview/

Hi Mauno "Could it be possible to use some kind of text filter where you can toggle between graphics (gif-images instead of unicode characters) and UTF-8". But why resort to that extreme? Surely, having an "ordinary" Unicode font available on the Moodle forums HTML editor is no big deal, and would be really useful.

Joseph,
I understood this wrong and thought there would be a need to show some unicode characters that are not visible in all "normal" unicode fonts like Lusida Sans Unicode. The only problem is then to choose which unicode font(s) or font-families to select to support needs of all browsers, OS, languages and users.

The idea of using something like uniview or character pickers by Richard Ishida ( http://people.w3.org/rishida/scripts/pickers/ ) came to my mind just as a choice for the difficulty of selecting that best unicode font...

Hi Mauno,
richard ishida's code picker looks like an excellent tool... thanks for the link!
And yes the problem is to find a Unicode font / font-family which will suit all browsers. Maybe this does not exist... yet?

OK, well, I've added "Lucida Unicode" to the menu in the HTML editor on moodle.org, which will tell the browser to use "Lucida Sans Unicode, Lucida Grande, Arial Unicode MS, san-serif" for such text.

Will that do?
