Description

I have confirmed that I am still enrolled in Using Moodle, and subscribed to the Installation Problems and Windows forums, and checked my profile and my e-mail address is still correct, but have not gotten any posts in my e-mail since Tuesday morning at 3:37 AM Pacific Daylight Time (Los Angeles time). I realize that this kind of things happens during moodle.org maintenance but this is ridiculous. I have no idea how to test this bug. Oddly enough, the last post I received is from Helen Foster!

I should add that I learned about the maintenance issue from MDLSITE-275. But almost 3 days is a lot more than 20 minutes!

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your report. There have been problems with forum post emails recently, though I was under the impression they had been fixed.

Please could you confirm whether you expect to receive an email digest or a single email per forum post.

HF,

Thank you for your comment. I normally get a single e-mail per forum post. I still haven't gotten any since I created this issue, although I have received e-mails from The Tracker regarding this issue.

RLE

P.S. I wonder whether this issue was originally assigned to you because I mentioned your name in my description.

MD,

I have reported this problem to my ISP, which handles my e-mail. They suggest I un-subscribe and re-subscribe to your forums. Do you concur?

Hi Richard, my emails (single and digests) are working fine (and so are other users).

Resubscribing won't make a difference, I don't think, but you can try it.

I think the problem is more likely at your ISPs end somewhere, perhaps a filter?

MD,

Well, the ISP says they don't see a problem, so I'll try resubscribing, if for no other reason than to prove that it doesn't help. I'll post another comment here when I'm done.

MD,

OK. I have re-subscribed to the Installation Problems Forum, but not the Windows Forum. Let's see if there is a difference between the two. It looks like the latest post is from you, and is almost an hour old, so I'll just wait, rather than posting a test post and inconveniencing everyone else. Maybe when I wake up in the morning I'll check the forum for new posts.

MD,

Well, as I said last night (my time), I have re-subscribed. I have just confirmed that there have been forum posts today. Not a single e-mail though.

Can you find in a log somewhere an exact copy of one of the e-mails moodle.org tried to send me today, and post it here? I mean the whole thing, including header. Then the clowns at my ISP who say they don't have a problem will have something to look for in their mail server log.

Thank you in advance.

RLE

EDIT: P.S. If you have received a rejection e-mail, like "Undeliverable, addressee unrecognized" or the like, that would be useful to see as well, needless to say.

Thx again.

OK, I've checked the mail logs and found this:

Mar 25 15:30:20 server8 postfix/smtp[21014]: 2B03E71773: to=<hccrle@sbcglobal.net>, relay=sbcmx5.prodigy.net[207.115.21.

is_blocked._For_information_see:http://www.att.net/bls_rbl/ (in reply to MAIL FROM command))

Which means your ISP has blacklisted the moodle.org mail server from sending anything to you. I've no idea why.

I've sent them an email asking them to lift the block or explain it.

MD,

As I recall, I brought this up with my ISP at the time, and they denied blocking Moodle e-mails.Nevertheless, the problem continued for a few more days and then cleared up, seemingly by itself: I got one e-mail on April 1, '08, and started getting e-mails en mass again on April 2, '08.

The next major e-mail drought (there have been several minor ones) was early this month, when you reported an explosion at the mail server (http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=98433#p434845).

Well, I don't know whether it is an ISP block or an explosion this time, but except for one e-mail yesterday I have not gotten one e-mail of an Installation Problems Forum post since Saturday, June 14, '08 (PDT).

It's still the same problem, there are lots of these in the logs:

Jun 18 05:01:53 server8 postfix/smtp[22550]: 594FB7101E: to=<hccrle@sbcglobal.net>, relay=sbcmx2.prodigy.net[207.115.20.21], delay=1, status=bounced (host sbcmx2.prodigy.net[207.115.20.21] said: 553 5.3.0 flpi192,DNSBL:521< 75.125.176.154 >is_blocked.For_information_seehttp://worldnet.att.net/general-info/bls_info/block_inquiry.html (in reply to MAIL FROM command))

Note that 75.125.176.154 == mail.moodle.org

MD,

Thx for the feedback. I just saw your latest comment, so I haven't contacted my ISP about it (not that it would do any good, considering their response the last time), yet the drought of forum post e-mails seems to have ended (for now!). I received none on Sunday (my time), one on Monday, none on Tuesday, seven on Wednesday and so far, 18 today. (All from the Installation Problems Forum. I still haven't gotten any since Saturday from the Windows Forum, but I usually don't get very many from there anyway.) Go figure.

BTW did you fill out the form for administrators of mail systems that have been blocked (http://worldnet.att.net/general-info/bls_info/block_admin.html)? I found that by following the link in your comment. I don't know what you would put in the "What changes have you made ..." field. I guess, if I were the mail.moodle.org admin, I would check Other, and type, "No changes needed."
