while I could ping and traceroute to www.moodle.org I was getting network timeouts to port 80
this was just effecting www.moodle.org, not tracker or docs

Thanks for reporting this, it is a known problem due to hardware limitations of the server.
We are looking at upgrading it in the very short future and I will do what I can in the mean time

Actually, I think there are some folks who would be interested in the moodle.org architecture so was wondering..... in as much as moodle.org is arguably the largest Moodle....

Are the mysql servers connected to the web servers via separate networks?
What kind of mysql architecture has been implemented?
How many web servers are there?
Has anything been virtualized and if so what?

One reason I ask is because the situation I am seeing today is different than the typical situation recently where we get the busy page..... as what I am seeing now is a time out, which suggests that I am not getting an acknowledgment from the web server, as opposed to the web server not getting a response from the mysql server.....

In an effort to consolidate conversations regarding moodle.org performance I have created a forum thread.
Please see http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=113921 for answers and feel free to ask questions there.
