As much as I think the Moodle Docs front page could be improved, I find the Joomla page very confusing and much too crowded.

What might be an idea is using a colour scheme for differentiating between the different user groups.

The draft1 page is more like a splash or intro screen which provides too little information for my taste.

I still really think we need to make the front page look more like a front page.

Which begs the question, what does a front page look like

I think I did the draft1, and have not thought about that in "a while". I will re-examine the links above again. I think the sub pages work (ie /Draft1, /Draft2, etc) to show what a "front page" in Moodle docs could look like.
Thanks Helen for note that arrived in my email.

Starting looking at Moving to Moodle. Have you seen:
http://www1.umn.edu/moodle/instructor/guides/index.html
for a different way to present info to a teacher.

@Chris
That is still a bit too crowded for my taste but I like the use of graphics. Looking at the source code of that page it seems to be handmade.

IMHO we should look for good examples of MediaWiki front pages which will be most easy to implement, e.g MediaWiki's own front page at http://www.mediawiki.org. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:Version reveals which extensions they are using.

Frank, I agree with the U of MN comments. Too busy for a main page but I like their use of graphics. Perhaps an idea to borrow for the opening teacher page.(After all they have a wide range of instructor familiarity with Moodle, which is one of our major issues).

I looked at the Mediawiki.org site. Digged and ended up here
http://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Main_page&action=edit
The main page is really made up of around 30 templates, plus I suspect some classes and features we do not have.

In the past (which is probably unfair when talking about the future), MD was kept simple so it was easy to edit by people who did not know anything about a wiki. Since the front page of Docs is locked anyway, this is less of an issue.

I am also thinking we could get many of the effects of mediawiki.org by using templates ourselves. Consider a table on the front page like Draft 1. Instead of placing images in the cells, we place a template. The template happens to be a table with 2 columns, one has an image, the other links.

On the other hand, I would like to have a couple of more features available for use of at least someone with sysop rights

Thanks for the links. Chris
