In our use, teachers don't usually want the checklist to appear in the gradebook. 

It would help a lot to reduce confusion if the default maximum grade value could be set to 0 (or another value) in the plugin's admin settings.

Another helpful addition would be a tooltip next to the maximum grade input in activity settings.
