WYSIWYG editor adding unwanted characters in the form of < and / and >

There are unwanted characters appearing in between tags when submitting wysiwyg content in the form of: (taken from between </td> and <td> tags - i.e. not within the table cell tags themselves but inbetween the close and open tags (so appears above the table).

At this point I can tell you that:

a) it didn't only happen when working with tables, and,
b) the Moodle courses I am working on involve copying and pasting from other web pages
