      Description

I and others are finding it too easy to mistakenly leave out the question text when making an MCQ. I think this should be a required field as I can't think of an example of a time when a question would make sense with only answers available. A better distinction between question name and question text would be good too e.g. 'text to be show to students' and 'name to be shown to teachers'.

How about "Question stem"? (leave question name as it is).

Better than 'question text' I think, but having 'question' in the first field is making my students write the whole question there (using Jamie Pratt's new question-creation activity module). Perhaps 'Question name' and 'Question'?

I've not looked at that module - perhaps it needs addressing there rather than in core...

As for "Question" definitely not IMO, there are already too many things called "Question" in the Matching question type.

Well, the module in question uses the standard question forms which come as part of core, so it would need to be fixed there. I've not used the matching type, but would it really confusion due to a totally separate type of question?

How about 'Question stem' and removing 'Question' from the 'question name' bit, leaving just 'Name'?

I think so as the part of the interface we are discussing is common to all question types.

That would work, I think. However, and forgive me for asking this, if they are missing now will a name change itself make any difference ?

Well, for the questions made so far, no it won't, but I've only been trialling the question creation module since it was released a couple of weeks ago and I'm planning on using far more extensively now as it gets the students to write my assessments for me

Definitely worth the change for the future.

I've just realised that I missed "MCQ" in the title of this issue. I was thinking more widely than that - but all questions need t have a consistent interface.

We await Tim's comments now I suppose...

There is a valid case for questions without any question text. For example, when teachers are presenting the questions on paper, any so just want Moodle to display choices 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D' that relate to what is written on the paper.

I have to say that this is a rather fringe use case, but no need to break it unless we have to.

Of course, If we make question text a required field, then teachers who want to leave it blank can just type a non-breaking space or something.

Anyway, there is a lot of discussion here, before I can write any code, I need a clear proposal that most people are happy with. Would someone like to start a discussion about this in the quiz forum, http://moodle.org/mod/forum/view.php?f=121, and then later, if a consensus emerges, summarise the preferred solution here. Thanks.

As with anything like this there won't be a solution that suits all. How about the ability to set the default for this somewhere in the admin settings. Not sure where it could go ATM so would need a new interface for question defaults, not trivial (but if implemented I have some suggestions for additional defaults).

There are already question defaults in Moodle 2.5.

However, the proliferation of trivial options is something that should be resisted. I am not going to add an option for this.
