      Description

The course role assignments screen is where I first got lost when using Moodle, and it is still confusing as it's the first place where breadcrumbs are necessary for navigation. The screen appears after a new user creates their first course, but there is no indication of how to get to the course you have just made at all, so those who are unfamiliar with the convention of using the breadcrumbs have no idea what to do.

      Suggestion:
"This screen allows you to add people to your course. Choose the role you wish to assign from the drop down and use the add button after highlighting them (use CTRL-click or SHIFT-click to add lots at once). When you are finished, go to your course page by clicking on the short name of your course in the breadcrumbs at the the top of the screen."

Matt, I think this has been addressed in 2.0. See attd.

Thanks for the heads up Ray, I've not really had much of a poke about with 2.0 yet. Looking at it now, I notice that the location is a bit odd as other links like this, such as the 'see all course grades' link in modules results pages are not at the bottom like that.

I think some consistency would help a lot as I think that there are a lot of places that would benefit from workflow-based navigation like this. Perhaps a 'where do you want to go next' box, based on common next-actions for the user's role. I mentioned this in Tim's navigation dicussion in the GDF as well: http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=115620 but he said that it was a little outside his current scope and suggested specific improvements like this one for the time being.

Where would be the best place for a consistently placed and styled box like this? I think top right or top left, as bottom of page may not be noticed if there is a lot of content. If Tim implements some sort of top left navigation structure, it might get it the way, so maybe top right?

        Matt:

Np. Yes, agreed about the position. Top left I think as top right is sort of Show course grades territory.

Definitely not in the navigation bar like the "Question bank management" link in 2.0 (Sorry Tim, Ollie if you're reading this I still think it's a bad move).
