      Description

Martin requested that I tidy up the forum navigation in regards to subscription links and options with a purposed structure of:

      • Subscription mode
        • Allow people to choose
        • Force everyone to subscribe
        • Initially subscribe everyone
        • Don't allow subscriptions

          Hi Sam,

I notice that subscription mode has the following options:

          Optional subscription
          Forced subscription
          Auto subscription
          Subscription disabled

which seem much less clear than the ones you list (especially Auto subscription vs Initially subscribe everyone). Can you explain why the wording was changed?

          How about:

          Optional
          Forced
Everyone is subscribed initially (or Initially subscribe everyone)
          Subscriptions not allowed

That was me, talking with Sam.

Main reasons are keeping it short and being able to re-use the string for just displaying the current mode (try it as a student).

          Thanks for explaining things Martin.

Will the links in the settings block have title attributes? (Thinking of linked issue MDL-20488.)

Also, I found it confusing in forced subscription mode that the teacher has a 'Show/edit current subscribers' link when they can't edit the list of subscribers.

I was confused too, but it's a feature for admins only apparently. I'm not sure if it's really useful ... might be worth taking it away.

Title attributes could help for the subscription links, yes ... suggestions?

Admins only? The 'Show/edit current subscribers' link was displayed when I was logged in as a teacher/facilitator.

Re. a title attribute, I'm in favour of "Send me email copies of posts to this forum" or is it possible in 2.0 to send copies another way?

Many people don't seem to understand the meaning of forum subscription. The nl lang pack has the phrase "Subscribe to this forum" translated as "Ik wil e-mail van dit forum" (I want email from this forum).

There is certainly no problems introducing explanatory title attributes for the options.

I agree Helen, subscription is a little confusing, more ezine than forum.... I would expect to follow a forum and receive notifications from it.

Note that subscription no longer just means email ... they are sent to the Moodle messaging system and could then go to all kinds of places.

The only alternative I can think of is "Notifications" but is this worth changing the term we already had for 8 years?
