      Description

This issue is just for discussion purposes really.

Presently when Moodle sends out forum messages it uses 'noreply@moodle.org' for the from header on the first post and then (depending upon settings) the posters email address for replies.
I wonder whether it would be better netiquette if we were to always use noreply for the from header and put the posters email address in the reply-to header.

Forum emails I receive from moodle.org currently don't display the users profile pic or group pics if the email appears to have come from a poster I have not yet trusted... just a hunch but this switch may fix that as well.

Anyway it's been a long time since I'm dealt with email servers/clients so perhaps we have it correct presently, if so ignore this issue!

      Cheers
      Sam

I suppose this is related to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Policy_Framework too, right?

If I turn SPF on in my domain skokda.org now, are mails with my posts from moodle.org going to be marked as spam?

What could be done is something like described here: http://www.openspf.org/Best_Practices/Webgenerated . Reply-To could be set to user's email, this will not "break" SPF.

It looks like we now have the SPF validation sorted out, but we still have a distinction in the FROM address between the sending of the initial post and replies.

Linking this to MDL-3714 which looks at Reply by e-mail. This kind of change would also affect (read break) VERP and relies on the user's e-mail address being exposed (which is a big deal for many people).

I strongly suspect that this change will not happen, but we should bare it in mind as we assess things in MDL-39707.

              Hi all,

Now that we have working reply-by-email functionality, I feel that this issue should be closed as a Won't fix.

This is a forum, and the ideal is that forum communication is encouraged rather than direct user communication in this manner. I suspect that this is the expectation in a forum type-of environment.

              Closing this issue accordingly.
