We have just had results back from a first round of accessibility testing on one screen of our Moodle 2 based system. Some of the problems identified by our expert tester (Chetz Colwell) apply to standard Moodle 2. These relate to keyboard and screenreader access. (She also tested other accessibility technologies, but there weren't any different high priority problems identified there; the keyboard access problems do also prevent voice recognition software working properly.)
1. On the navigation block, expand/collapse arrows cannot be operated with the keyboard. In addition the items that are initially collapsed, such as '30 March', '6 April' etc do not receive keyboard focus and cannot be operated. This means that the content within these items cannot be accessed by keyboard users.
2. Collapse buttons (on blocks) cannot be operated with the keyboard.
3. Help icon alt text is e.g 'completion tick boxes' whereas the title attribute is 'Help with Completion tick boxes'. Screenreaders will not read title attribute. Recommendation: Alt text needs to match the title (so it includes the word 'Help').
4. When there is a label that has completion tickbox, the tick box is read before the text of the label. (On other items the tickboxes are correctly read after the title of the item.)
I think problem 4 is mine, and I know why that is happening (this probably didn't apply in Moodle 1.9). I should be able to resolve this.
Re the other issues - do Moodle HQ developers have capacity to address these, or is this something that we will need to develop if we want to have it done within the next couple of months? I think us doing it is an option, but it's a bit of a challenge to schedule here.
