I have installed two copies of 2.1, and this problem existed in both. I am also running version 1.9.12+ on the same server, CentOS, PHP 5.3.6, MySQL 5.1.57, and I do show up in "Online Users". I am also the Administrator in the 1.9.12+ site.

Maybe in version 2.1 (or 2.0), the administrator needs to enrol himself into the course in order to show up. I tried this, and then I do show up. Well, I am not sure if this is a bug, or just a feature change in this "online user" block. I could not find an answer to this in the online documentation.

      Description

In Moodle 2.1, I (I am the manager) am not showing in the "Online Users" block. In version 1.9.12+ and earlier versions of Moodle, I would always show. I looked around all of the Moodle 2.1 settings, and did not see anything for me to try. I wonder if this is a new "feature" of Moodle 2.1, that it doesn't show the Manager. I did try switching my role to teacher, and then to student, to see if I showed up in the Online Users block, but I did not.

          Hi, Rick.

I believe you are experiencing the current expected behaviour. Only enrolled users appear in the Online Users block. Managers are the same as others users in this regard.

          Michael,

Yes, I think you are on target with your response. In fact, this might be a better designed feature than before. In 1.9.12+, I (Administrator) always appeared in my course. But maybe there are cases where one would not want this to happen.

So, in 2.1, I did learn that I could add myself to a course and make my role be appropriate (such as Teacher). Then, my name shows up in the block of Online Users. It seems to me that Moodle 2.1 provides better flexibility, which I always think is good.

Here's the challenge--how to describe this in the documentation! It's a little tricky. Here is what I did. First, I had to add a "manual" enrollment method, otherwise I did not get the "Enrol User" button. Then, I had to go to the Course Users, and add myself manually. Then, I had to click on the "+" in the "Roles" cell and make sure that I was in as "Teacher". This seems to work.

I have heard Martin D. talk about the online docs becoming a Wiki. I am not sure if this has happened. However, this is a case where I would actually be willing to take a stab at creating or modifying the docs. This feature is subtle, but really good.
