Affects Version/s: 2.1.2
Fix Version/s: None
Some of our students are renaming their assignment files after uploading them into Moodle and removing the file extension from the file name. This makes it difficult for some staff as the file no longer opens by default with the right software. If the extension is removed the file also fails to be sent to Turnitin.
There is a discussion on the forum File extension can be removed using "Rename"
There is a similar problem mentioned here
MDL-25215 - File extension lost when using "Save As" field but it is about the "Save As". I understand that this one was fixed in Moodle 2.0.2.
We are currently using Moodle 2.1.2 but also experienced the problem with 2.0
Suggestions for improvement (all requiring a change to Moodle):
• Include a site wide setting to globally remove the rename option for some user types e.g. students, or
• Include a site wide setting to globally turn it off in some places, such as assignment upload pages, or
• Have the name and extension in two separate fields so that it was clear that the extension was not a part of the name.
