There are a few problems in how course sections are automatically renamed if you move sections via clicking the crosshairs icon and selecting the position to move to (not via dragging and dropping).
Start with a course in Topics format with 5 sections. The number of sections doesn't actually matter but I'm using 5. Make sure editing is turned on. It will be helpful if each section contains a different activity type so that you can tell them apart without relying on the section name.
Problem 1 (moving sections downward):
- Click the crosshairs in Topic 1 to move it.
- Select "To item Topic 5" in the popup dialog.
- Note that the section is moved and the section names are correctly updated so that they are still in numerical order.
- Click the crosshairs in the new Topic 1 and select "To item Topic 5."
- Note that the section is moved to the bottom but it now has no name and what should now be Topic 4 is still named Topic 5. In other words, the sections are now named: Topic 1, Topic 2, Topic 3, Topic 5, blank.
- Refresh the page and the sections are renamed correctly.
Problem 2 (moving sections upward):
- Click the crosshairs in Topic 5 to move it.
- Select "To item Topic 1" in the popup dialog.
- Note that the section is moved after Topic 1 instead of before it, so that it is now the second section instead of the first.
- Note also that the sections are not renamed correctly. They are: Topic 1, Topic 3, Topic 4, Topic 5, Topic 4.
- Refresh the page and the sections are now renamed correctly, but the topic that you moved is still the second topic instead of the first topic as intended.
Problem 3 (custom section names):
- Give each section a custom name. It is helpful to name them in a way that identifies the contents. For example, if the section contains a quiz, call it "Quiz topic."
- Move the last section to the first section.
- The custom section names don't match the contents of the sections. Some might match but some won't.
- Refresh the page and the sections are renamed correctly.
Problem 4 (a second move doesn't stick):
- I have sections in this order: Page, Label, Forum, Quiz, Assignment. You don't necessarily need those names in that order but I'm using those names and starting order for this example.
- Move the first topic to the last. My order is now Label, Forum, Quiz, Assignment, Page. This is correct.
- Without refreshing the page, again move the first topic to the last. In my case, that's moving Label to Page.
- Note that the section names are not renamed correctly. My sections are now: Label (contains a forum), Forum (contains a quiz), Quiz (contains an assignment), Page (contains a page), blank name (contains a label). The sections by content are in the correct order but the section names are wrong.
- Refresh the page.
- The names are corrected to match the contents of the section (Quiz contains a quiz, etc.), but the Label topic (containing a label) is back at the top rather than being at the bottom.
Problem 5 (the dialog doesn't refresh section names):
- In any of the above problems that require a refresh to correct the section names, attempt to move another section before you refresh.
- Note that the section names in the move dialog are also incorrect.
We do not have these problems when using drag and drop to move the sections. The problems happen when clicking the crosshairs and using the dialog to select the destination for the move.
