As student create a discussion and post in forum

Go to course administration -> reports -> Course participation

Select the forum from the 'Activity module' select box and 'Post' from 'Show actions' select box and press 'Go'.

You should see Yes (2) next to student name.

For few actions like forum post, multiple events are created and logged which are counted in participation report as 2 actions and not 1.
