There's a consensus that numeric grades interfere with student's inclination to engage with formative feedback. This has major resource implications, since staff spend many hours providing feedback that doesn't get to influence students' future work.
Moodle could better support this. Currently in Moodle Assignment if markers want to provide feedback separately from numeric grade, the most straightforward way is to record the marks offline in a Grading Worksheet and upload this when the time comes.
As well as being fairly cumbersome, there's a business continuity risk here - if the marker with the Grading Worksheet is unable to upload it, the students don't get their marks.
Could there be a setting in the Gradebook to hide numeric grades from students while revealing feedback, and to optionally reveal grades subject to certain conditions, including some proxy for engagement with feedback, or time elapsed after feedback has become available?
