With a user profile picture, there is a photo description field. This allows a user to add text that is used as the alt tag when the image is displayed. The choice to add this text is optional and allowing users to add any text into the input is questionable.

During the usability study, people were not sure of the purpose of the text box. Description field for profile picture is not very clear. "Why am I describing my photograph?"

Recommendations

• Remove the profile photo description field
• Review accessibility where profile images appear. What alt tag is actually used? It may be unnecessary to have an alt tag at all.
• If it is necessary, use the user's name instead "Picture of XXX" where XXX is the default name display.
